Keira Walsh signed a new contract today to commit to another three years at Manchester City.

By the end of the contract, she will have been with the team she has supported since childhood for 10 years.

The England midfielder handed in a transfer request last year. Following World Cup semi-final defeat, Walsh was hit with criticism online, unexpected on her part. The abuse knocked her confidence and with offers from overseas clubs such as Athletico Madrid and Lyon on the cards, she felt drawn towards a move to a bigger club than City.

Walsh quickly withdrew the request but her future at the club remained uncertain until now, despite her announcing her commitment and dedication to her team after the withdrawal.

As her previous contract neared its end this month, Walsh took to Twitter to make public her delight at remaining at the club.

Walsh played her part in City’s dominating team that won two domestic cups last season. The 22-year-old even scored in the FA Cup final, when they beat West Ham United at Wembley in May 2019.

Who is Kiera Walsh?

Aged just 12, Kiera Walsh received her call up to the England U15 squad, a team she went on to score for goals for in her two years. She moved quickly up the rank from U15s to U23s before making it into the senior side in 2017, aged 20.

She has made appearances in the winning SheBelieves Cup side and played in the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

After playing youth football with Blackburn Rovers, Walsh has been with Manchester City since the beginning of their rebrand. She made her debut at 17-years-old, in 2014.

The midfielder signed her first senior contract in June 2015 and added an extension 18 months later.

Walsh’s team honours:

  • Women's FA Cup: 2016–17, 2018–19
