Women's Euros Move To 2022

It has been decided by a UEFA committee that the Women's European Championships will be postponed due to COVID-19.

The competition was due to take place in summer 2021 but following the postponement of other sporting events, it has been moved to July 2022.

A decision was made in March to postpone the men's Euros due to take place this summer. This was because of the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus.

In his statement, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says the move ensures the competition will get the "spotlight it deserves". He added: "By moving to the following year, we are ensuring that our flagship women's competition will be the only major football tournament of the summer".

Why has the competition been postponed?

The answer to this question is not as simple as postponing the women's tournament because the men's was.

Euro 2020 taking place in 2021 would mean that the two tournaments would be competing for media attention and viewers. Therefore, moving the women's competition to 2022 gives it its own platform.

Additionally, with some of the games for the men's tournament set to take place at UK grounds, this ensures all of the women's games will be able to be played at their planned locations around the country.

The postponement also means the tournament won't overlap with the Olympics - in which many of the England players would be representing Great Britain.
