WOTB Promotes: 'Women's Football Supporters'

It can be hard to find people to bond with when it comes to a love of women's football so groups on social media are key.

Women on the Bench spoke to Women's Football Supporters about their time involved in women's football.

On their website, they say:

Our group was created in May 2019 and has grown ever since! We have a number of members from all across the world in our group and we share posts about our favourite players and teams.

The group have grown since emerging online last Summer. They now have over four thousand followers on Twitter as well as a successful Facebook page and website. On these platforms, they share news from the world of women's football as well as interact with women's football fans.

They have also provided these platforms that allow other fans to talk amongst themselves, something that is seen as important when trying to grow the game.

How did you get into women’s football and when was that?

We became aware of women's football when Team GB took part in the 2012 Olympics in London. We watched matches that took place during the Olympics and enjoyed the coverage. Also, one of our work colleagues at the time went to a match at the Olympics and said that he thoroughly enjoyed it.

Have you ever personally experienced sexism in football?

We haven't personally experienced sexism in football. However, we have heard sexist chants at players and referees whilst attending matches.

Why did you decide to create the Women’s Football Supporters Twitter page?

We started a Facebook group and it was suggested to us that we open an account on twitter for people to follow us.

How do you feel you’ve helped through starting this page?

We have been able to bring people together who follow/support women's football. We have been able to raise more interest and awareness of the women's game with people who follow us.

Is there any way you hope to improve the state of the women’s game through your unity within your group?

We just want to keep doing what we have been doing. By doing that we will continue to raise more awareness of the Women's game.

How would you like to see women’s football evolve?

We would love to see women's football be as popular as men's football. We would like to see more coverage on TV in newspapers and magazines to raise more awareness and interest to those who may not have even watched a Women's Football match. We would love to see the popularity of Women's Football grow.
